As we observe Autism Awareness Month this April, it’s crucial to understand how we can support and include individuals on the Autism Spectrum. At Bricks and Minifigs Littleton, we are passionate about enhancing lives through LEGO® for each and every individual who walks through our doors. LEGO play can be a valuable tool in promoting inclusivity, while also providing therapy for children with Autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Did you know?

  • 1 in 36 children has been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.
  • ASD is nearly 4 times more common among boys than among girls.*
  • Early intervention is important for children with ASD because those who are able to get mental, cognitive and other necessary support at an early age are more likely to have a positive experience in the years to come.**

Understanding Autism and the Power of Play

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. Play is an essential part of childhood development, and for children with Autism, it can be particularly beneficial. LEGO sets offer a unique way to engage children with ASD, providing a safe and structured environment for learning and creativity.

An article in Autism Parenting Magazine* reviewed 15 studies involving LEGO Therapy or Interventions for children with ASD and found that 14 of the 15 studies reported improvement in social and communication skills of participants. The children were reported to have a stronger desire to play with others, better social interactions overall, better coping skills and more engagement with family.

The National Institute of Health’s studies “found that  LEGO Therapy activated programming and organizational skills related to working memory and problem-solving.”***

Based on these studies and numerous others, it’s sufficient to say that LEGO building can be a beneficial tool to strengthen a variety of cognitive abilities, especially for those with ASD.

How LEGOs Can Support Children with Autism

1. Building Social Skills: LEGO play encourages collaboration and communication, helping children with Autism develop essential social skills.

2. Enhancing Motor Skills: The hands-on nature of building with LEGO bricks helps improve fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

3. Stimulating Creativity: LEGO sets offer endless possibilities for imaginative play, allowing children with Autism to express themselves creatively.

4. Promoting Focus and Attention: Building with LEGO bricks can improve concentration and focus, which can be challenging for children with Autism.

5. Boosting Confidence: Completing a LEGO set can provide a sense of accomplishment and boost self-esteem in children with Autism.

3 Simple Actions to Support Autism Awareness and Inclusive Play

  1. Education and Awareness: Educate yourself and others about Autism Spectrum Disorder to promote understanding and acceptance. A great place to start is the CDC’s website.
  2. Create Inclusive Play Spaces: Ensure that your play areas and activities are accessible and welcoming to children with Autism. Provide sensory-friendly options and accommodations as needed.
  3. Support Autism Organizations: Donate to or volunteer with organizations that support individuals with Autism and their families. Here in the Littleton area, you can connect with the Autism Society of Colorado to get involved or donate.

Join Us in Building a More Inclusive World
This April, let’s unite in raising awareness for Autism and promoting inclusive play. Through understanding and support for individuals with ASD, we can all play a part in constructing bridges of acceptance and appreciation, one brick at a time.
