If you’re a parent who’s heard the phrase “I’m bored” multiple times this week, then we might have something that can help! One of the best things about LEGO bricks is their versatility, so read on for some fun LEGO activities for kids and families.

Play the LEGO Way – LEGO Activities Ideas

A child creating a building out of LEGO® bricks and minifigures set to the side.

Aside from just being fun, building with LEGO bricks has multiple mental, creative, and physical benefits for kids. So, next time your kids are complaining about having nothing to do, you can arrange one of the following activities for them, knowing that they will be learning and growing all while having fun.

The next time your kids don’t know what to do, pour out those LEGO containers and try these creative activities!

And if you don’t think you have enough bulk LEGO pieces, then come to your local Bricks & Minifigs. We’ve got tons of bricks for you and all your LEGO building activity’s needs!

#1 LEGO Activity – Make a LEGO Maze

Everyone loves a good maze, from corn mazes in the fall to a hedge maze behind an ancient castle, it’s fun to get lost sometimes. And if you want your kids to get lost in fun for a few hours, then this is a great activity to show them.

To start this off, all they’ll need is a baseplate and a pile of bulk LEGO pieces. From there, have them build a walled maze on the baseplate. They can design it for their favorite minifig. You can tell them to try making a specific design with the maze.

Or for an extra bit of fun, you can add a marble and have them try and roll the marble all the way from start to finish. And, if you’ve got multiple kids and builds, then make them swap mazes and see if they can get through each other’s.

#2 LEGO Activity Art Idea to Build a LEGO Portrait

You don’t have to pull out the paint and risk a mess for your kids to have a good time trying to “paint” a picture.

Get out your bulk bricks and tell your kids that their new challenge is to “paint” a portrait of each other, of you, or of themselves. But, they have to do it with LEGO bricks!

When they’re done, you can even hang up their new artwork on the walls.

And if they’ve already done this or aren’t in the mood for portraits of people, they can always try their hand at “painting” whatever they’d like. That’s one of the best parts of using LEGO bricks; the options are endless!

This can also be a great activity for adults. Whether a date night or party, there’s plenty of fun opportunities to try building an accurate (or funny) LEGO representation of your loved ones.

#3 LEGO Team Building Activity by Bowling with LEGO

You don’t need to head out to a bowling alley to have a fun day at the lanes, not when you’ve got bricks lying around.

For this LEGO themed activity, you can use your bulk LEGO pieces to build a set of pins. If you have less pieces or struggle with the design aspect, you can make them smaller and less bowling-pin-shaped.

Once you’ve built your pins, you can position them on the floor. We recommend using tile or hardwood floors, though certain types of carpet could work too. From there, it’s time to bowl! You can even build your own ball if you’d like.

Set up the pins, give it a whirl, and see how many you and your kids can knock down.

#4 LEGO Activity for Preschooler – Design a House

Two children creating a building with LEGO® bricks.

Playing house can be even more fun when you’re the one designing the whole thing! If your preschoolers or older kids need a longer project to keep them occupied for a while, then this is a great option.

Find your bricks, maybe even grab a pencil and paper to help design, and set aside some time to build out your dream home.

If the kids need a little more prompting, then you can add different challenge elements, like:

  • Only use certain colors
  • Build a pool for their minifigs
  • Connect all their houses together to make a full neighborhood

Whether you’re using your design to play house with your minifigs or a way to build your future dream home, there’s no shortage of the ways that LEGO bricks can help you construct a fun day in with toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-aged children.

#5 Play a LEGO Game of Tic-Tac-Toe

This is another super simple activity that you’ll need a baseplate for. Grab a baseplate and build a tic-tac-toe grid. Get creative with each of the squares or the grid as a whole, but once you’re done, you’ll have a whole game to play!

You can use pieces of similar color or size to be the X’s and O’s. Play to see who wins the best out of 5!

#6 LEGO STEM Activities – Build an Invention

A girl playing with a robot built out of LEGO® bricks

One of the best things about LEGO products is that they are great opportunities to practice STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) principles.

If your kids are the type who want to learn while playing (or if you just think they need a little fun homework), then this is a great way to encourage their scientific ambitions and skills.

If your kids already have a science project in mind, then just turn them loose with a pile of bricks and whatever they’ve designed. But if you’re looking for a few more LEGO STEM activity ideas, — which can work great for a classroom or club activity as well — here are some fun builds that still teach STEM principles:

  • Bridge-Building Challenge – Explore load-bearing structures, tension, and compression.
  • Simple Machines Station – Build levers, pulleys, and gears to see mechanical advantage in action.
  • Custom Catapult or Trebuchet – Experiment with trajectory, force, and angles.
  • Earthquake-Resistant Tower – Test structural integrity and stability with a shake test.

These simple projects turn curiosity into creativity and give kids a hands-on way to explore the science behind their play.
