About Us: The Bricks & Minifigs Story
How did we get so lucky to surround ourselves with LEGO® products for a living? Sometimes even we can’t believe it! This page will teach you all about us and the journey that led us here.
2003
It started as a dream. David Ortiz was a stay-at-home dad to twin boys (maybe the only job cooler than owning a Bricks & Minifigs franchise); as such, he was surrounded by LEGO® bricks, minifigs, and accessories.
But what if a brick gets lost? Or, you missed a cool set that was discontinued the year before you knew it existed? Or your toddler develops a taste for minifig heads (which is exactly what DUPLO® products are meant to prevent)?
David was convinced that if there were a place where you could buy, sell, and trade LEGO® products, it would be a success. But it was just a dream. What did a LEGO® enthusiast know about creating a reselling empire?
2009
Our other hero is John Masek, who brought extensive retail experience to the table. The only problem? Their fateful meeting came when both bid on the same collection of LEGO® sets online! They were destined to be mortal enemies!
Instead of fighting, however, David and John started chatting (and they agreed to split the sets from the online auction). The two of them realized that each possessed skills that complemented the other’s, and they began to talk about how they could work together to turn David’s dream store into a reality.
2010
The first Bricks & Minifigs store opens in Battle Ground, WA. And just as David suspected years ago, there was a significant built-in market ready to buy, sell, trade, and geek out over LEGO® products. In fact, the store did so well that the Battle Ground location wouldn’t be the end of the story.
2011
Other enterprising entrepreneurs wanted to bring Bricks & Minifigs to their communities—and franchising was the way to do it. The first franchise location opened in 2011, but other small business owners couldn’t turn their backs on a promising opportunity with a passionate fan base.
2024
Business owners and LEGO® fans both know a good thing when they see it. At this point, there are over 130 Bricks & Minifigs locations across the United States and Canada, with additional stores opening all the time. The store and its surrounding community have struck a nerve with a fan base devoted to creativity and creation.
Where do we go from here? Just like your next build, the sky’s the limit!

Our Fandom
We might be biased, but we think our customers are pretty awesome, and they seem to like us, too.
“This place is great. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. From individual pieces to used sets and new boxes, their prices are reasonable, and they have a large selection. If you like LEGO® [products], you NEED to check them out.” – Antoni Williams, Bricks & Minifigs in Lansing, MI
“Great venue for my 10-year-old’s LEGO®/Ghostbuster-themed party. We had 13 kids from ages 7 to 11 who had a great time creating, racing, and crashing their own custom LEGO® cars.
Chris and [the] staff were so kind! They opened early so we could set up, entertained the kids throughout, and made it a fun time for all.” – Mark L., Bricks & Minifigs in Johns Creek, GA
“My kids love this store! My family has been here a handful of times since it opened and Ryan, his wife, and son are always welcoming and helpful! My kids love coming in, trading, buying, and building their collections…and I love supporting family-owned/run businesses!” – R Cut, Bricks & Minifigs in Riverside, CA
